    Step-by-Step Guide to Performing Umrah: Tawaf, Sa’i and More

    A cherished spiritual journey that every Muslims want to undertake is performing Umrah. Unlike Hajj, which is obligatory once in a lifetime and it is limited to the month of Dhul Hijjah in Islam. Umrah can be perform at any time of the year. Umrah has many benefits. According to recent estimates, oven 10 million pilgrims visit Makkah every year to do Hajj and Umrah. It shows its importance and global appeal.  It is important to understand each details to ensure a smooth and spiritually fulfilling journey. This guide provides an in-depth explanation of the fundamental Umrah rituals, including practical Ihram procedure, detailed Sa’i instructions and Tawaf guide.

    Step 1: Entering the State of Ihram

    The initial stage of Umrah starts with the Ihram procedure. First of All prepare for Ihram before reaching at Meeqat. Ihram is a symbol of purity and humility.

    • For women: There is no specific colours for women, but Modest, loose fitting clothes like Abayas.

    Covers the whole body except face and hands.

    • For men: Ihram clothing includes two white, unstitched garments. One draped around the shoulder and other wrapped around the waist.

    Sandals and slippers which reveal the top of the foot and ankle.

    Making the Niyyah (Intention)

      Make the intentions by reciting the following before crossing the Miqat:

    “Labbayk Allahumma Umrah” (Here I am, O Allah, to perform Umrah

    Step 2: Tawaf around the Kaaba

    Tawaf is the heart of Umrah rituals. It has deeply symbolic significance. It shows unity as millions of worshippers circle the Kaaba in worship of one Allah.

    • Preparation: Do wudu and enter Masjid al-Haram with modesty and humility. It is unforgettable moment to seeing the Kaaba for the first time. Many pause to make dua.
    • Starting Point: Tawaf starts at the Black stone. Touch it or kiss it if you can. If not then raising your hand toward it and say:  “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar.”
    • Seven Circles: Do seven counter clockwise circles around the Kaaba, keeping the Kaaba on your left. Each round begins and ends at the Black stone. Men should walk quickly for the first three rounds and they should walk normally for the final four rounds.
    • Supplications: There are no fixed prayers but recommended are:

    Rabbanaa aatinaa fiddunya hasanah wa fil akhirati hasanah wa qinaa aza’ab annaar.

    This Tawaf guide advises pilgrims to stay composed, avoid from pushing and focus on worship rather than hurry.

    Step 3: Drinking Zamzam Water

    After Tawaf, pilgrims drink water from holy Zamzam well. A blessed source of water provided by Allah to Hajar( A.S) and his son.

    • Drink while facing the Kaaba.
    • Make sincere duas as Zamzam water is regarded as blessed and is well known to fulfil the intentions of person who drink it.

    Step 4: Sa’i between Safa and Marwah

    The next step is Sa’i ritual that recalls that Hajar (A.S) effort to get water. Important Sa’i instructions are given below:

    • Beginning at Safa: Raise your hand, face the Kaaba and make dua and say:

     Innassafaa wal marwata min sha’airillah, faman hajj al baeeta awi’tamara falaa junaaha a’laihi aiyattawwafa bihi maa, wa man tatawwa’a khairan fa innAllaha shaakirun a’leem.”

    • Walking Between the Hills: Take seven walks from Safa to Marwah. One trip equal to one circle. The rituals come to an end at Marwah after seven rounds.
    • Green Marker Section: Women may walk normally, but men should follow Hajar’s (A.S) desperate search by jogging gently between the two green lights.
    • Supplications: Continue dhikr, Quran recitation and personal duas.

    By following these Sa’i instructions, pilgrims may develop patience, show perseverance and strong their faith on kindness of Allah.

    Step 5: Shaving the head or Trimming the Hair

    The final step in Umrah rituals is existing the state of Ihram by shaving or trimming the hair.

    • For men: Trimming is acceptable but Shaving the head is preferred.
    • For women: Women cut their hair to the length of a fingertip.

    This step serve as a symbol of renewal and humility.

    Practical Tips for a Smooth Umrah

    Umrah rituals are performed with peace of mind with careful preparation.

    • Hotels Check-in: Checking into hotel is one of the most important step after arriving to Makkah. Select accommodations close to Masjid al-Haram but some may require shuttle service. Keeping your booking confirmations and travel documents ready that will speed up the process. 
    • Stay hydrated and rest: drink plenty of water as soon as you arrive there because weather can be hot. A quick rest before getting ready for Ihram and going to the Haram, can make the experience easier, especially after long travel.
    • Keep Documents Safe: Secure passport, visas and identity card.
    • Avoid Peak Times: Perform Tawaf and Sa’i during off-peak hours for convenience.
    • Stay Spiritually Engaged: Utilize every moment for worship.
